Preggo Health Nut

Pregnant and fit is not an oxymoron.. its possible!

Vegetarian… To Be or Not to Be?!

As I have explained in my “about me” section, I am currently taking nutrition classes and working toward becoming a dietitian in the future. So, this week I read a whole section about vegetarianism. It didn’t really focus on being pregnant and a vegetarian but, the info was great and may help some of you preggo or not, decide if this is the kind of lifestyle you would like to pursue.

First lets get into a little background/ reasoning for being vegetarian and then go over some of the health benefits of this diet. Hopefully by the end you will be slightly more informed and better able make a decision that suits your lifestyle.¬† Read the rest of this entry »

Baked Oatmeal for Breakfast

Last night we decided to have breakfast for dinner… my fav! I LOVE breakfast… a little too much sometimes! So anyway, we had an excess of eggs because my husband didn’t know we already had a dozen eggs at home and got two more while we were at the store (I just wasn’t paying attention, otherwise I would have stopped him)! Oh well! So we made scrambled eggs, hash browns and then I wanted to get a little healthy so I made the following recipe: Read the rest of this entry »

What’s Going on with My Body??

When you are preggo, your body goes through some serious changes… I’m sure you know about all the physical changes your body will make but, let talk about the physiological changes that are going on inside your body! These changes can really affect the way you exercise. When you are preggo, anatomic (physical) changes alter balance, flexibility, joint stability and coordination, while the¬†physiological changes that occur affect the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal systems. So lets break it down! (I’ll write out all the scientific big worded explanations but… I’ll also explain in terms you can understand).

Cardiovascular changes-
Your cardiovascular system quickly jumps into overdrive in early pregnancy and stays that way until the end! Cardiac output (how many times your heart is beating and pumping out blood) increases up to 50% during pregnancy and blood volume can increase up to 45% by the 3rd trimester (Artal and Sherman 1999). Cardiac output increases primarily by an increased stroke volume (the Read the rest of this entry »

Yay! Hit a Goal!

I just wanted to post an update because I hit one of my goals and I was really excited about it! So, before I was preggo as I’ve said before, I was able to run ¬†6-6.5 mph on the treadmill for 3-4 miles with no problem and I could do up to 7.5 mph when I was doing intervals… After getting preggo trying to run on 7 for a half a lap made me feel like I was dying and couldn’t breathe (I think because of the 50% increase in blood volume pumping through my body). Anyway, I set a goal of being able to run one full mile at 6 mph with no problems and yesterday I did it!!! I was so excited! I did my usual starting with walking one lap at 4 mph and increasing to 4.5 mph Read the rest of this entry »
